WHAT IS PBIS?
Positive Behavioral Interventions & Support (PBIS) is a research-based framework for teaching and supporting positive behaviors for ALL students. This school-wide approach to discipline focuses on building a safe, positive environment in which all students can learn. The benefits of implementing PBIS for students include:
- Better academic performance
- Social Emotional Competence
- Reduced Bullying
- Reduced Office Referrals & Suspensions
At Malcom positive behavior is taught with a focus on the 3 R’s:
-
Responsibility
-
Respect
-
Relationships
Positive Behavior is reinforced daily in a variety of ways and in all areas of the school. Students may receive verbal praise...
Blue Malcom Kid of Character tickets for demonstrating RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY OR RELATIONSHIPS...
Green Magnificent Malcom Mariner Tickets for making a difference in the world
Blue tickets can then be used by students for a variety of prizes and rewards! With an accumulated15 Green Malcom Mariner Awards, students earn Principal’s Award certificates.
As well as reinforcing positive behaviors, we also utilize a positive approach to discipline. When a consequence is given, it is used as a teaching opportunity. The consequences are related to the problem behavior and time is spent reinforcing our positive expectations and re-teaching skills through reflection, modeling and practice. Our staff utilizes Restorative Practices and Conflict Mediation as a way of helping students learn from their mistakes.
The School-Wide Behavior Matrix shows the behavior expectations in all areas of the school. These expected behaviors are taught by the classroom teacher and reviewed in PBIS assemblies twice per year.
